History
North Croft was built in 1828 and was the home of the village carrier,
who carried the post and more general goods. It still has the village
letter box in its walls. Most of the villagers served the Cragside
estate in the past and a history of the village is kept in the cottage.
The cottage is set in the beautiful hamlet of Snitter which has
remained largely unchanged for two centuries. It has been refurbished
trying to retain much of the original feel, with a large inglenook
fireplace, a wood burning stove, beamed ceilings, lovely old doors
and lots of period decorative touches. Furnishings are old cottage
style rather than modern, but are comfortable and renovated. There
is an old writing desk by the window - an ideal spot for writing
and reflection. The storage heaters and wood burning stove make
the cottage warm and cosy even on cooler days.
Location. Snitter is very close
to Thropton. Thropton has two very good pubs to eat in and a small
village shop, garage and Post Office. It has a lovely riverside
walk and also has access to public transport.
North Croft is within 5 minutes drive of Rothbury itself. Rothbury
village has a range of shops and eating places, and is a centre for
leisure pursuits such as golf, bowls, tennis, and others. It has
a library, a heritage centre, and an Art Gallery with lots of local
craft work. It also has a doctor, dentist, vet and a cottage hospital.
Walking and leisure North Croft is set in the heart of excellent
walking, touring, cycling and fishing country with fine walks directly
from the cottage. Rothbury Crags are five minutes away and Simonside
ten minutes by car. Snitter is set in the foothills of the Cheviot
Hills and has ready access to the National Park. Wildlife abounds
and the careful watcher can see red squirrels, deer, badgers and
foxes and a host of bird life.
