| Physic
Cottage nestles quietly on the lane which shares its name, amongst a handful of
neighbouring cottages and private dwellings on the edge of the village of Thropton.
A minutes walk down Physic Lane is the Cross Keys Inn, an authentic
Northumbrian pub with a real fire, real ale and real conversation. A minutes
walk up the lane and the leafy Northumberland countryside leads to the moors high
above Coquetdale, overlooking the picturesque town of Rothbury with its small
shops and tearooms. Inside the cottage, a traditional coal and wood
burning stove warms the open living room with a very well equipped kitchen/dining
area to one side. A washer-drier, dishwasher, refrigerator, microwave, electric
hob and oven are all provided in the kitchen, whilst a colour television and video
complement the books, games and films on hand. Both the bay-windowed
double bedroom (king-size duvet) and the separate twin bedded room (single duvets)
have en-suite shower and toilet facilities. Electric heating in all
the rooms makes for a cosy cottage atmosphere on even the chilliest nights, and
a barbeque is available for al-fresco enjoyment of the lovely garden views.
With on-site parking and kenneling, Physic Cottage has everything you need
for a relaxing and restorative holiday break. Just what the doctor ordered!
To
find Physic Cottage follow the road straight through Rothbury and turn right before
the Cross Keys Inn.. Collect the cottage keys at Riversview House which is next
door. Legend has it that the Knights Hospitallers of St. John of
Jerusalem had a hospital at the bottom of Physic Lane during the 13th and 14th
centuries. They probably gathered wild flowers, herbs and rose hips which
are a very good source of vitamin C, calcium, phosphorous and iron. The Knights
may have gathered the rose hips here to make a tonic to fend off coughs and treat
sore throats and bleeding gums. The leaves of elder, which also grows here, were
used in an ointment to ease swellings and bruises. The lane offers exclusive views
of the Simonside and Cheviot Hills within the National Park. Details
